I hope everyone is enjoying the start of spring, just hoping for a little more sunshine and warmer weather soon!  I would like to take the opportunity to highlight some activities that have happened and also look to some upcoming events this summer.

Ontario Chito Ryu Association of Ontario Spring Tournament
On Sunday, April 28th, 8 members of the New Hamburg Karate Club participated in the Chito Ryu Ontario Karate Championships in Toronto. They competed in both kumite (point sparring) and kata (forms), capturing a total of 12 medals. Congratulations to all who participated and proudly represented the New Hamburg Karate Club, and those family members that went along to cheer them on. Special thanks to all the senior belts that helped with organizing, set up and refereeing. Results are as follows.

Canadian Chito Ryu Association Bogu Cup (Gatineau, Quebec)
 
This is our national Chito Ryu Tournament held every two years. Date of the tournament will be June 27th through 30th, hosted in Gatineau, Quebec. It’s a fun-filled weekend which also includes many different activities such as social events, clinics and a banquet. The Chito Ryu Association of Ontario will be hosting special free clinics available for students that are competing in the tournament. Pleases see the attached website coupebogucup2019. Let me know if you are planning on attending, I can forward you the information regarding the free training seminars.


Summer Session Registration:
The summer session will be starting on Thursday, June 6th, returning students have first opportunity to register. Rates are as follows: $155.00 per student.            

Family Rates: For two or three students of the same family, 10% will be deducted from the session fee. Families with more than three students pay for a 3 student maximum and any additional students are free.  

Please note that we do accept e-transfers to this e-mail address in addition to cash and cheques.

**Remember to bring socks and running shoes to class - on nice days we may be having class outside**

With the warmer weather, I would like to take the opportunity to highlight some activities that have happened and also look to the spring for some upcoming events.   

Upcoming Tournaments: 
Ontario Chito Ryu Association of Ontario Spring Tournament
Each year the Chito Ryu Association of Ontario, which represents our karate style, hosts a provincial tournament. This tournament is a great opportunity for students to meet and compete with other students from our own style across Ontario. The tournament is usually a smaller setting and provides a great atmosphere and opportunity for students that are competing, especially for the first time. This year’s tournament will take place on Sunday, April 28th, 2018 -  Registration information and sign up is located at the back of the dojo.   Registration deadline is April 25th.

Ontario Karate Challenge (Brantford) Tournament
On Saturday February 16th 16  students from The New Hamburg Karate Club participated in the 28th Annual Ontario Karate Challenge in Brantford Ontario, which included hundreds of competitors from across Ontario. The students participated in kata (forms),  kumite (sparring) and weapons kata and captured 19 medals. Thank you to all who attended as participants and those that went to support our team and proudly representing the New Hamburg Karate Club.

With the start of the new year, I wanted to take the time to update students on some club and Chito Ryu association news and upcoming events.
Tournament: Ontario Chito Ryu Association of Ontario Fall Tournament

On Sunday, October 28th, 11 members of the New Hamburg Karate Club participated in the Chito Ryu Association Provincial Championship Tournament in Toronto. Upcoming Events:

Tournaments

Ontario Karate Challenge
The new year signifies the start of our tournament season. The first tournament "Ontario Karate Challenge" will take place on Saturday, February 16th, 2019 at Brantford Collegiate Institute in Brantford. Participants compete in their own age and rank categories in kata, weapons and/or kumite. We will be reviewing tournament rules and be practicing with competitors leading up to the tournament. Registration information is posted at the back of the dojo. Registration deadline is Monday, February 4th.

Canadian Chito Ryu Association Bogu Cup (Gatineau, Quebec)
This is our national Chito Ryu Tournament held every two years. Date of the tournament will be June 27 through 30 hosted in Gatineau, Quebec. It’s a fun-filled weekend which also includes many different activities including social events, clinics and a banquet. The Chito Ryu Association of Ontario will be hosting free special clinics available for students that are competing in the tournament. More information to follow. 

Spring Karate Session Registration:
The spring session will begin on Thursday, March 7th and will run for three months. Returning students are given first opportunity to register for subsequent sessions. We currently have a waiting list for new students entering both the Little Samurai class and Senior Kids' classes. In order to assist with the registration process, we are asking returning students to sign up for the spring session by Thursday, January 31st in order to reserve a spot. Registrations received after this date will be placed on a waiting list, which will be dependent on class size. To register, please e-mail Sensei or sign the list at the back of the dojo. 

Note: If you have previously completed a registration form, you do not need to complete it again. Registration fees can be paid on the first day of the new session. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Karate Certificate Picture Frames and Belt Display Rack

The New Hamburg Karate Club will be taking orders for students interested in purchasing custom-made Certificate Picture Frames and handmade Belt Display Racks. More information and order forms will be available at the back of the dojo. Deadline for order submissions is January, 31st. Thank you to Todd Crouse and Sara Furey for organizing this sale.

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all our returning students and the new members that have joined in the last few months. I wanted to update you on some events and activities that have happened over the summer and those that will be happening this coming fall and into the new year. 
Summer Events:

Canada Day 151 DemonstrationOn July 1st, thirteen members of the New Hamburg Karate Cub participated in the Canada 151 celebration in New Hamburg. We were warmly greeted by a great crowd on a very warm day. Thank you so much to the following students for working so hard to put the demonstration together. Thank you to everyone who came out to cheer us on and celebrate Canada Day with us. It was an awesome day!

Tameshiwari (board breaking) class

On Thursday, Aug. 30th, students in the adult class participated in the annual board breaking class. Needless to say there was lots of firewood available to take home at the end of the night! Special thanks to Kurt Lowrick for leading the class and Ray Roth and Joel Rousselle for helping to organize and cut and plane the wood.

Upcoming Events:


Higashi Sensei Clinics and AGM:

Sensei Shane Higashi is a 10th degree black belt and the head of our Chito Ryu style. He will be holding a special clinic at the Canadian Chito Ryu Association Annual General Meeting in Toronto. This free clinic is open to all students 8 years of age and older. The clinic will take place on the morning of Sunday, Nov. 4th. This is a great opportunity to meet and train with Higashi Sensei and some of the most senior black belt instructors from across Canada. Please see the attached information for class times and location. Let me know if you have any questions. 

Friday Nov 2, 2018: Black Belt Clinic will be held from 1-3pm at Hombu Dojo (Higashi Dojo - 89 Curlew Dr, Toronto, ON M3A 2P8)
Saturday Nov 3, 2018: Free open clinic to all belts will be held from 2:00-4:00 pm at the Hotel. 
Sunday, Nov 4, 2018: Free clinic at the hotel. Black belts 9:00–10:30am. Kyu (coloured) belts 10:30-12:00pm

Tournaments

Registration sign-up forms will be available at the back of the dojo during the next week. Registration deadline is Thursday, October 18th. In addition to competitors, the association is also looking for volunteers to assist with score/time keeping at each of the rings. There will also be a sign up sheet for volunteers who are interested in helping out.
